November 28, 2004Retro Rock TriviaMel and I went to the Gillnetter on Wednesday night to play some Retro Rock Triva. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but I ended up having a killer time. The theme for the team names was, "things you shouldn't say to a cop". Torn between "is that your nightstick or are you just happy to see me?" and "do you wanna frisk me?", we went with the latter. The game is basically song identification -- they play you a clip of a song, you have to identify the title and artist, and then can guess the year for extra points. I was pretty disappointed with my performance on the 60's and 70's stuff, but redeemed myself with my knowledge of the 80's and 90's. We ended up getting 2nd place. Next time we'll be first. First will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

November 16, 2004Like, I can't stop saying likeI recently received a transcription of a conference call I was on at work. I barely spoke during the call, but the few things I did say were riddled with the word "like". Although I know that I say the L-word a lot, I was rather horrified to see it recorded on paper. Maybe I shouldn't have watched Clueless so many times. I swear I'm not a valley girl, really. It seems that "like" is generally used to replace another word, whereas "um" is a filler word added to give one more time to formulate a thought. After analyzing a brief conversation with my roommate, I realize that I commonly use the word "like" instead of "said". Apparently, I'm part of the "like" generation. But that's no excuse. I need to expunge the word from my vocabulary. However, it seems that when I think about NOT saying "like", I say it even more than usual (make sense -- it's top of mind). Does anyone have any, like, tips for help me to, like, not say "like" so much?

November 11, 2004Happy Birthday MelIt was Mel's birthday yesterday. We went to Kam's for dinner, and I have to say that Kam knows how to treat his customers. We got a free round of drinks and he gave Mel, the birthday girl, a cool umbrella. We had everyone over to our place afterwards for drinks and cake. Check out the pictures.
